Welcome to Rimmers Music

Established in 1978 by Frank Rimmer and Harry Cookson, Rimmers Music is one of the oldest and largest musical instrument retailers in the UK. Previously called, 'Frank Rimmers Keyboards,’ the Southport store was the first outlet. The business opened a second location, in Leyland, and third in Preston in 1981.  

 
History Highlights:  

 
1981: Gary Tate, current Managing Director, joined the company as a teacher, and while teaching at Rimmers Music, became qualified as a Yamaha music school teacher. After a brief time, Gary was asked to take over as manager at the Leyland store! He quickly excelled at his managerial role, and in 1985 he purchased his first half of the company from Frank Rimmer when Frank was ready to retire.  

 
1987: Gary bought ‘ED Brown Organ Shop’ in Blackpool from Mike Edwards and renamed it Rimmers Music Blackpool; it had been one of three stores owned by Edwards at that time—the other two were Rimmers Music Preston and Rimmers Music Southport. All three stores had teaching facilities.  

 
1991: Gary moved the Leyland store from its previous location to a much larger space on that same road; at this point he changed its name from Frank Rimmers Keyboards to Rimmers Music. 

 
Fast forward to 2010: Rimmers Music grew further, acquiring 3 new stores: Wigan, Bury, and Edinburgh. These acquisitions allowed us to expand even further!

We have established Rimmers Music Schools at each of our branches with hundreds of satisfied students of all age groups from 5 years old to 95 years old. Our music studios are purpose built by us and fully stocked with the latest equipment. We are also London College of Music and Rock School examination centres (and are highly respected by both), although taking exams is optional. We want you to have your lessons and enjoy them. We will teach you at your pace in the styles you want to learn, or take you through the exams of your choice. All our tuition is via private one to one lessons so you do not have to worry how you look or sound, just have fun. We will help and guide you all the way. Some of our staff also work as College Lecturers. All our teachers are DBS checked for security on a regular basis and many have students that have returned each week for lessons for many years, constantly improving to higher playing standards and improving their knowledge.  

We offer all our customers a Free Lesson in our Rimmers Music School on the instrument of their choice. We currently teach piano, keyboard, acoustic guitar, classical guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion, singing/vocal coaching, clarinet, saxophone, flute, ukulele, mandolin, banjo, violin and music theory. For customers who cannot get to our music school (and customers who can) we allow access to our exclusive online lessons we have created free of charge 24 hours a day.
