When purchasing a snare drum there are many options to consider when choosing what would suit you and your style of drumming better.

Shell Material - There are many different options to consider when it comes to choosing the material of the shell.

Firstly, there are wood shells that all produce different results, to give you an idea of this below are two different kinds of wood that are used that produce opposite results.

Maple - This wood produces an even amount of high and mid tones, with an added mix of slightly warm lows - basically an all-purpose wood.

Mahogany - This wood produces muted highs, smooth midranges, warm low-end tones and a vibrant and resonant effect.

There are so many variations, but if you do your research you will be certain to find a snare drum that meets your exact requirements. 

Secondly, there are metal shells that also produce a variety of different outputs, below are two examples:

Brass - This metal produces open highs, mids and lows making it a warm and vibrant result that is produced.

Copper - This metal produces muted highs, well-pronounced midrange and low-end tones. The results are loud and powerful.
