What We Think
Gibson are famous for their Les Paul shape guitars, ES shape guitars and the SG guitar but they have a range just as famous as these models, the designer guitars! What are these..? The Flying V, The Firebird and The Explorer guitars. These guitars have been used by so many legends of the guitar such as Eric Clapton (Firedbird and Explorer), Johnny Winter (Firebird), Slash (Firebird), The Edge (Explorer), Albert King (Flying V), Jimi Hendrix (Flying V) to name but a few.
The new 2019 Gibson Designer model guitars are very authentic to the original era guitars, for example the Firebird uses the famous Firebird Mini Humbucker pickups, which give you that sound the guitar had on its creation back in 1963. The Explorer series guitar now comes in a lovely Antique Natural finish which this guitar is famous for, as does the Flying V! The guitars all come with Gibson Deluxe Hardcases as well to complete the package. A personal favourite of mine is the new Cardinal Red colour of the Firebird, it’s a guitar that would certainly stand out on stage. You can see this guitar in the pictures in this blog.
All these guitars have unique sounds, feel and looks. If you haven’t had a go of a Firebird or an explorer for example you’re missing out, these guitars not only look cool but sound awesome and you can play any styles from Blues, Classic Rock to Heavy Metal. We have these guitars here at Rimmers Music in Bolton so come on down and have a go for yourself, I’m sure you’ll love them as much as we do. I have also done some videos for these guitars showing off how versatile they are, so check them out.
The Gibson Firebird was designed by car designer Ray Deithrich back in the 60s. Its shape was inspired by the tail-fins of cars in the 50s, resulting in an explorer type shape that’s more rounded and stylish.
This shape become renowned as the ‘’reversed-body'' style, which uses an offset upper horn and smaller lower horn to create its memorable flipped over aesthetic. This design also provides you with excellent playing comfort – letting your strumming hand sit comfortably in any position.
The 2019 Firebird is constructed from a mahogany body and matching neck, with a classic rosewood fingerboard. This results in a comfortably weighted instrument that won’t cause strain after long playing sessions. The selection of tonewoods also enhances the overall tone with a warm, resonant character.
The neck also features a 44mm slim taper profile. This design is perfect for reaching across the entire fingerboard with ease and doesn't compromise the neck's durability or stability. Its frets have also been cryogenically treated, extending their durability for a longer lifespan.
Equipped with a set of Mini Firebird humbuckers, this 2019 Gibson Firebird offers the iconic bright tones and focused output of the original firebird guitars. Originally designed to serve the growing demand of a P-90 sized pickup with no hum, the mini humbuckers have become a favourite for their tight and focused sound.
These authentic replicas still deliver the same tones and feeling as the originals. With its classic bar alnico II magnets providing a vintage character and wax potting eliminating unwanted noise for a truly vintage performance.
The Firebird Tribute is finished off with a selection of high-quality components, providing you with a strong and stable instrument that will handle all walks of life. Gibson's own Nashville tune-o-matic bridge lets you easily adjust the string action and intonation range with ease. Simply adjust its mounting rods to set the perfect height and screw in or out the saddles to set the intonation.
A set of Grover's Rotomatic machine heads provide excellent tuning stability. The additional tektoid nut also enhances string stability. It self-lubricates to help eliminate friction, which can usually cause tuning problems. The nut material also increases the Gibson's harmonics and sustain, creating a more rich and detailed tone.
