Korg Volca Modular Semi Modular Synth

Compact patch-based synth. Begin your modular journey. The Korg Volca Modular gives you a great introduction to the expansive world of modular synthesizers. Growing ever more popular, modular synthesis is an amazing way to get more control over your sonic environment. Break free from the boundaries of pre-patched regular synthesizers and unlock your creativity.

Modular Power

Consisting of independent analogue synth modules, the Volca Modular gives you eight modules to patch and experiment with. All the modules are pre-patched underneath but your own patch set-up can be employed when using the pinhead jack cables. Giving you scope to change up your sound and routing for your own custom sound.

Source consists of a triangle VCO with a modulator. Functions gives you two envelope generators. Woggle is a random signal generator. Split distributes outputs. Dual LPG gives you two low pass gate circuits. Utility is a mixing scaling module that combines two signals in different ways. Space Out applies a reverb, and finally Sequence, which gives you connection to the internal sequencer. These eight modules work incredibly well together. Making the Volca Modular a very useful synthesizer.

Increased Functionality

The sequencer offers two modes of playback. A sequential mode and a random mode, these provide room for experimentation and variety and works especially well when used with other Volca systems.

The Volca Modular allows for quantizing to scale. With 14 scale types, the possibility to sync up with melodious instruments means the Volca Modular is not just great for single unit use, it also fits in an existing system easily. And thanks to its tiny size, it can be used anywhere, anytime.

The best Volca so far. The sounds you can make with this thing are off the scale and due to its semi modular design the options are virtually limitless.

It took me a bit longer to get the hang off than my other Volca's but with practice and perseverence, and a bit of precise adjustment, the Volca Modular produces stuff that you would only expect from much more expensive modular synthesizers. I especially like the step divider facility on the clock module, which creates superb rythmic effects and the rise and fall function, which can be used as an LFO or even within the audible range. Also superb is the Space effect which indeed sounds remarkably similar to my old spring reverbs I used to use. Almost exactly in fact. Very impressive indeed. And the sequencer has great random features, which together with the Woggle utility allows you to create extremely convincing Buchla like West Coast synthesizers jams.

And all for less than £200. Superb.
