Digital Pianos

Digital Pianos for Beginners, Home Players & Experienced Pianists

Digital pianos offer the feel and playing experience of a traditional piano with the practical advantages of modern technology. At Rimmers Music, we stock a wide range of Yamaha digital pianos, Roland digital pianos and Kawai digital pianos, from compact portable models for beginners through to premium cabinet and grand-style instruments for advanced players.

For most beginners, we recommend starting with an 88-key digital piano with a fully weighted hammer-action keyboard, touch-sensitive keys and sustain pedal compatibility. These features help develop proper control, dynamics and technique while still offering benefits such as headphone practice, adjustable volume and a more compact design than an acoustic piano.

If you are buying your first instrument, our Best Digital Pianos for Beginners guide explains what to look for and compares some of our most popular Yamaha, Roland and Kawai options.

How to Choose a Digital Piano

The right digital piano depends on how and where it will be used. Before choosing a model, we would consider the keyboard action, speaker system, pedal setup, portability, available space and how far you expect the player to progress.

Keyboard Action

For serious piano learning, weighted keys should be one of the first things you look for. A weighted hammer action recreates some of the resistance found in an acoustic piano and allows the player to develop control over touch and dynamics.

Different manufacturers approach keyboard feel in different ways, which is why comparing instruments side-by-side can be particularly useful. Yamaha, Roland and Kawai all offer excellent weighted actions across their digital piano ranges, but the feel beneath the fingers can vary noticeably between models.

Portable or Cabinet Digital Piano?

A portable digital piano can be ideal where space is limited or the instrument may need to be moved. Many portable models can also be combined with a dedicated stand and pedal unit to create a more permanent home setup.

Cabinet digital pianos are designed to remain in one place and usually include an integrated stand and three-pedal system. They can provide a more traditional playing position and are particularly popular for regular home practice and piano lessons.

If you want to move closer still to the mechanical feel of an acoustic instrument, it is also worth exploring our hybrid pianos, which combine elements of acoustic piano construction with advanced digital technology.

What Is the Best Digital Piano for a Beginner?

There is no single best model for every beginner, but we generally recommend an 88-key piano with a weighted hammer action, touch sensitivity, headphone connectivity and sustain pedal support.

Popular beginner choices include models from the Yamaha digital piano range, Roland digital piano range and Kawai digital piano range, while cabinet models can be a strong choice for families wanting a permanent home instrument.

What Do You Get by Spending More?

Once the essential foundations are covered, additional budget can improve areas such as:

• keyboard action and responsiveness
• piano sound and resonance
• speaker quality and power
• pedal response
• cabinet construction
• connectivity and app integration
• long-term suitability as the player progresses

A beginner does not need the most expensive piano available. The aim should be to choose an instrument that suits the player now while giving them enough room to develop.

Yamaha, Roland or Kawai Digital Piano?

Yamaha digital pianos, Roland digital pianos and Kawai digital pianos are all strong choices, and each manufacturer approaches piano sound and keyboard action slightly differently.

Yamaha draws on extensive experience building both acoustic and digital pianos, with ranges including portable P Series models, Arius home pianos and premium Clavinova instruments.

Roland specialises in digital musical instruments and is particularly well known for its keyboard actions, modelling technology and modern connectivity.

Kawai also manufactures acoustic pianos and places a strong emphasis on realistic touch and piano tone across its digital range.

There is no universal winner between the three. Where possible, we recommend trying comparable models and choosing the instrument whose touch, sound and format best suit the player.

Completing Your Digital Piano Setup

The piano itself is only part of a comfortable playing setup. Depending on the model, you may also need a suitable stand, adjustable bench, pedal unit or headphones for private practice.
