What Is Physis Technology?

Physis is a computer generated physical model of an organ pipe. The model can be manipulated in just the same way as a pipe voicer would approach an organ pipe.

The model defines the pipe bore mouth size and position material of manufacture etc and by manipulation of upwards of 20 parameters the sound is defined. The same model runs across the entire keyboard compass so there is a smooth transition of sound without any noticeable break points that can sometimes be heard in sampled sound instruments.

Also with sampled sound organ technology, each note reproduces identically each time it is played. In practice even in a single steady note there is a very subtle inconsistency in what you hear, as the air flow through the pipe always has some element of random motion. This ‘micro variation’ which the Viscount Physical model reproduces, adds a completely new dimension to the sound which greatly enhances the realism. Further as the organ sound is built up by the playing of additional notes and the adding of extra stops, the model subtly changes the ensemble sound just as would occur in a true pipe organ when the available air is delivered to an ever increasing number of pipes. Because of this the sound has a life that is not heard in sampled sound instruments.A further marvelous feature of the sound processing allows Physis instruments to develop individual sound boards for each of the organs divisions. In a pipe organ, each division (Great, Swell, Choir and Pedal) is set in a different area of the case. In a classic design the Swell organ will be near the top of the instrument, the Great in the centre and the Choir organ is often set behind the player with Pedal divisions set to the extreme sides of the case.

In addition, each division will have its own sound architecture with the possibility of bass pipes at the centre moving to the trebles at either side, referred to as a cusp layout. Alternatively the trebles can be at the centre with the basses to either side referred to as an inverted cusp layout. There are many other layouts and Physis technology allows us to faithfully replicate any of theses configurations for each of the organs divisions.

Placing these instruments in a church or concert hall setting this allows us to build a sound stage of speakers that will also faithfully place the sound source of each individual note at the point in the speaker array where it would be if it were to come from an individual pipe that the real instrument would sound to produce the note.

The OUVERTURE is an organ with 3 keyboards, complete pedalboard and 55 registers - each of which can select hundreds of organ and orchestra voices. There is also an orchestra register for every section of the organ which can be selected from the numerous options available. 

The organ comes with 8 organ styles (4 fixed and 4 programmable) that allow the organist to create and store an infinite number of combinations, either in the 128 internal memory locations or externally via USB memory. The parameter settings are easily accessible through the graphic display on the front panel. The “Tracker Action” style keyboard accurately detects touch by obtaining the speed of actuation of the keys, making it possible to feel a "Tracker Touch" effect, i.e .the correlation between the "touch" of the organist and the transient attack of each virtual pipe.

Developed with the award-winning and patented Physis® physical modeling technology, which reproduces the physical phenomena involved in the sound generation of the pipe organ, the Ouverture is capable of generating the highest-fidelity, most authentic church organ sound.

The Ouverture uses a revolutionary new sound system developed by Viscount called RAR (Real Audio Rendering). It is able to simulate multiple sound reflections of the walls, projecting the organist at center stage and involving them in an unforgettable sound experience – even from their living room or studio.

The majestic console was inspired by the artisanal organ crafting of French builder Cavaille-Coll – one of the most noted pipe organ builders of the 19th century and whose legendary style exemplifies elegance and refinement.

The instrument is equipped with four useful couplers in the sub-octave and super-octave, thanks to which the organist has an abundant variety of timbre combinations, within which the grand Plenum on the 32’ bass and the Concerto di Viole in 16’, 8’ and 4’ on the third manual.

 

A specific tremulant for the reed stop “Vox Humana” has also been included for expressive and fascinating effects.A dedicated thumb piston for each section allows the organist to play Orchestral sounds chosen from an extensive library. The Ouverture is a beautiful, as well as comfortable organ: the position of all the controls have been carefully studied and the music rack is both height and depth adjustable.

SOUND GENERATION

Powered by Physis

The OUVERTURE sets a new milestone in the reproduction of the classic organ sound as it effectively combines the unique RAR (Real Audio Rendering) and Physis® technologies, both developed by the Viscount Research & Development department. Physis® is a technology based on the creation of complex mathematical algorithms capable of simulating the physical and acoustical phenomena underlying the generation of sound in the pipe organ. It’s a completely different approach from common digital sound sampling because every single note, every chord, every slightest nuance of the performance is not the result of a simple “playback” of a sound but it stems from a sound generation process which operates fluidly in real time, just as it occurs organically and naturally in a physical instrument. The modeling algorithms that make Physis® organs so unique is the result of a monumental amount of work that now allows the creation of innovative and versatile instruments, redefining the state of the art.

AMPLIFICATION

Amplification RAR (Real Audio Rendering)

The detailed parameterization given by Physical Modelling, combined with the careful and lengthy work of components integration, has made the sound from the different speakers extremely natural.

The result is a warm and enveloping sound, as well as detailed and transparent. You are clearly able to hear the individual stops even after the instrument has been built up to full organ. In this latter challenge, the innovative front speakers play a primary role. The high sound quality and the precisely calculated position allow them to add significant detail to the sound of the organ, highlighting the dynamic evolution of each individual rank’s timbre.

The new Viscount RAR (Real Audio Rendering) technology represents a significant step forward in terms of definition, spatiality and body of the sound, which is the most authentic way yet to create that magical effect of the most important organ stop – ‘the ambience’. Sitting at the console of the new Ouverture, you will experience the most realistic impression of the instrument and its setting available from any digital organ you may care to play.

We have devoted special attention to the amplification system, in order to faithfully reproduce the impressive dynamics, the wide sound spectrum, and all the amazing spaciousness of the pipe organ sound.

In addition to the traditional amplification, we placed two pairs of full-range speakers at strategic points on the console: one pair on the outside panels and one pair on the top stop jamb panel. In this way, as the sound comes from different positions, it is possible to simulate the multiple reflections of the walls, ceiling and floor of a large reverberant space. The effect is quite startling. You will experience a difference just as significant as that achieved when you add a surround sound system to your home television.

KEYBOARD

“Tracker Touch” style keyboard 

Knowing the importance of the classic-organ keyboard, we’ve taken the utmost care in selecting the absolute best components. The mechanics of the keys gives the impression of a true “Tracker Action”, by obtaining the speed of actuation of the keys – making it possible to feel the “Tracker Touch” effect. i.e. the correlation between the “touch” of the organist and the transient attack of each virtual pipe.  The keyboard is not only comfortable and consistent to play, but also dynamically sensitive, which is useful for the MIDI and Orchestral sounds – but also essential to provide the “Tracker Touch” effect.

CONNECTIONS

Complete Connections

A complete selection of external connections is smartly situated.

In addition to Standard connections (MIDI In, Out, Thru; Headphones, stereo inputs), there’s a microphone with gain control, 4 external multiple outs + Sub – with the option to expand these to 12+1(Sub). There are also USB host and Device connections.

For the USB Host connection, it’s possible to use a thumb drive to save and upload sound settings.

For the USB Device connection, you can connect to a PC to personalize all aspects of the organ. With the Optional “Physis Editor” for PC, you can modify every single register for every single note – including volume, pitch, spacial disposition – and many other parameters 

INTERFACE

The registers are activated through elegant wood stops which have been placed laterally for the most precise and egonomic result: every level corresponds to a solo division of the organ for which the selection of the registers is simple and intuitive.

A rich selection of Orchestra voices are easily and quickly activated through dedicated pistons. Within the various controls, you’ll find tremolo specific for the register and “Voix Humaine”, which allows you to set very specific effects.

OUVERTURE has been will thought out so every organist will have an accurate study of the position of controls, with everything comfortable and easy to see both above and below.

The graphic display is well situated in a sliding drawer which maintains the classic aesthetic of the instrument.
