Yamaha FG-TA TransAcoustic Black

What We Think

The Yamaha FG-TA has a rich mahogany dreadnought body and great looking solid spruce top. It also has a classic rosewood neck and Nato neck with a super smooth matte finish making this guitar play like silk.

Although the FG-TA is a quality instrument with the expected features of a guitar a revolutionary piece of key is tucked away inside. TransAcoustic Technology.

In the simplest of term this guitar has built in controllable reverb and chorus, but not in the convention sense of plugging into to a PA or amp an then here the effect though the speaker. No, no, no. This guitar has reverb and chorus straight from sound hole no cables required. But how is this done…

An actuator fitted on the inside of the guitar back vibrates in response to the movement of air caused by the strings. The vibrations of the actuator are then conveyed to the body of the guitar, then the air in and outside the guitar body generates authentic reverb and chorus sounds from inside the body itself.

In conclusion this guitar is a unique joy to sit and play, it’s easy to be inspired as lush reverb rolls over you tricking your brain, imagining you’re sat in the middle of a cathedral all to yourself. With just the press of a button.

From Bury Store

When I first heard of these guitars I was somewhat sceptic and considered it somewhat of a gimmick but after playing one in my local music store I was amazed by how dynamic the guitar sounded and felt to be played.

First of all the sound of the guitar played on its own was somewhere near how one of my Taylors sound, im not kidding if it wasn’t for the resale value of my Taylors I winder if I would own one at all after hearing what Yamaha can do with a guitar for the price of the instrument.

Turning on the preamp (holding down the level control) and activating the onboard effects, an actuator installed on the inner surface of the guitar back vibrates in response to the vibrations of the strings. The vibrations of the actuator are then conveyed to the body of the guitar and to the air in and around the guitar body, generating authentic reverb and chorus sounds from inside the body. I was very impressed with the Reverb, what a lovely rich and full sounding tone I was greeted with, the chorus was a little on the thin side but I guess the size of the speaker in the body is somewhat responsible for this?

The smooth satin neck is a lovely feature on these guitars making them suitable comfortable to hold and play, what a joy these guitars are, I cant tell you what a bargain you are getting for your money.

Solid Spruce & Mahogany Construction

The Yamaha FG-TA TransAcoustic features a solid spruce top, which offers a versatile sound, perfectly suited to a wide range of playing styles and techniques. Its solid spruce top yields a crisp and articulate tone, as well as producing a broad dynamic range. Spruce is quite elastic in nature, which resonates well whilst remaining strong, and provides a focused, clear sound of deep lows, warm midi-range, and bright sparkling highs. Additionally, the solid top is coupled with mahogany back and sides, which generates a rich, full, distinct warmth with plenty of resonance. Its mahogany back and sides also deliver a meaty mid-range, producing punchy, woody tones with plenty of depth and complexity to please most playing styles.

Nato Neck & Rosewood Fingerboard

Constructed from nato, the Yamaha's neck produces similar tonal characteristics to mahogany, offering added warmth and resonance. Furthermore, its nato neck also responds greatly to numerous techniques, enabling players to experiment with more alternative playing styles and truly appreciate the sound produced. The neck is topped with a rosewood fingerboard, adding a sonically pleasing warmth to the guitar's overall sound. As well as this, its rosewood fingerboard provides a smooth and energetic playing experience.

Dreadnought Body

The Yamaha FG-TA features a dreadnought body, which projects an enormous voice yet still maintains overall tonal balance. Its versatile yet boomy dreadnought voice is well-suited to rock, folk, indie, punk, pop, and a player's unique style and technique. Furthermore, its dreadnought body also offers a comfortable playing experience to those more comfortable with bigger-bodied guitars and players with a longer reach.

System70 TransAcoustic & SRT Piezo Pickup

Yamaha's System 70 TransAcoustic preamp not only provides the ability to plug the guitar into an amplifier, but can also amplify the guitar itself. With an actuator installed on the inside of the back panel, the piezo pickup transmits the vibrations from the strings to the actuator, and then to the body of the guitar and the surrounding air. This generates an authentic reverb and chorus sound inside the guitar, amplifying it's sound.

The preamp comes with three controls that are designed into the body to minimise the amount of holes in the guitars body, reducing the loss of the acoustic sound. A chorus knob and reverb knob provides adjustments to the amount of chorus or reverb the actuator produces, with the reverb knob offering a choice between room and hall. The third switch turns the actuator on or off, and if the guitar is plugged into an amp, then it controls the line out's volume.
