What We Think
Another fantastic guitar from Yamaha, The FS 820 is a lovely spruce top guitar at an absolutely killer price. An updated version of the old FG180 with more volume and bass, this guitar adheres to the age-old adage, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! The Ruby red finish is my personal favourite and combined with the sleek, curvy body, this guitar is Guaranteed to raise a smile.

Yamaha is proud to unveil the new FG800 Series of acoustic guitars. These updated models will replace the successful FG700 Series while keeping the unique character of this legendary range of instruments.
FG800 Series: Things you need to know
- Replaces the successful FG700 Series
- Solid top acoustic guitars
- Scalloped X Bracing for more volume and more bass
- Carefully built to last a lifetime
- Series includes a reimaging of the classic FG180, limited to 250 pcs in Europe
The FG800 models have been developed based on extensive research as well as feedback from players, dealers, customers and industry experts. We found that lots of things didnt need to be touched But there was a consistent theme: People wanted to go back towards the original FG180 sound with just a little more volume, a little more bass, a little more oomph.
To achieve this, we relied on a proprietary software that the Yamaha Elemental Technology division created to analyse and simulate the tonal characteristics of musical instruments, from a construction viewpoint. This way, we were able to understand exactly what the bracing was doing to the top of the guitar to create the instrumentâl voice and we could backwards engineer a design to give us the tone we wanted.
The result of this unique engineering approach is a totally new scalloped bracing pattern. It gives the FG800 models more volume, more projection, more low end and a bigger tone for the player everything we set out to do. In addition, the new bracing pattern moves the resonant centre much closer to the middle of the guitar, with a big impact on both the tone and the feel to the player. Furthermore the FS-Models get a shallower body (90-110mm) compared to the 700-Series (100-120mm) for improved playability especially for beginners.
But the goal was not only to create a guitar that sounds great today, but one that also lasts for a lifetime. So we did just that while staying at the forefront of guitar-building technology as the FG Series always has. A solid top board, a 0.25mm thin finish for great tone and superior wood protection, a super-comfortable thin neck profile and a thin back and sides construction ensure maximum volume and resonance with long-term stability.
The FS model body is 10mm slimmer than that of the FG body, offering increased comfort and playability with no loss of volume or bass. Having a body that is easier to hold makes the FS more appealing to beginners and smaller guitarists, including female players. In addition, the smaller dimensions and lower propensity to feedback make FS guitars ideal for stage use.
