The Story of Rimmers Music
Established in 1978 by Frank Rimmer and Harry Cookson, Rimmers Music has grown to become one of the UK’s most respected and longest-standing musical instrument retailers. The business began as Frank Rimmer Keyboards, with the first store opening in Southport. Following its success, a second branch was launched in Leyland, and by 1981, the company expanded further with a third store opening in Preston.
History Highlights:
1981: Gary Tate, Managing Director, originally joined the company as a teacher. Whilst teaching at Rimmers Music, he became qualified as a Yamaha Music School teacher. After a brief time, Gary was asked to take over as the Manager of the Leyland store, which he readily accepted.
1985: Gary purchased half of the company from Frank Rimmer when he decided to retire.
1987: We later acquired the well-known 'ED Brown Organ Shop' in Blackpool and rebranded it as Rimmers Music Blackpool. In the same year we acquired a store on Church St in Preston which had previously been a shoe shop, (this store has since be relocated to Crook St).This then made a total of 3 locations part of the same family of stores including our 1st location in Southport.
1991: Rimmers Music relocated the Leyland Store from its previous location to a much larger space on the same road. At this point, he changed the name from Frank Rimmer Keyboards to Rimmers Music.
2026: There are now six Rimmers Music stores located in Bolton, Chester, Leeds, two in Edinburgh and Preston that show our extensive range of acoustic, digital and Grand pianos. Rimmers Music has taken over the North West, and we have no plans of stopping!
