When was Steinway & Sons Founded?
In 1836 Heinrich Engelhard Steinway built his first piano in his kitchen, and then went on to build 482 pianos over the next decade. In 1850 the family emigrated to the USA and in 1853 Steinway & sons as we know it today was Founded.
Where are Steinway Pianos Made?
Steinway pianos have been made in two locations around the world, in the Astoria factory in New York and in the Hamburg factory in Germany since 1880.
In recent years Steinway has endeavoured to build a piano more available to the populous, but with the same attention to superior features and detail. In 1992 this came about with the production of the ‘Boston’ range of grand pianos and upright models. Produced in the Kawai factory in Japan, chosen by Steinway as offering quality and superior methods of production. These models are designed by Steinway, with unique Steinway features and Patents built into all the models.
Again in 2005, Steinway added another prestigious range to the Steinway family, with production of the ‘Essex’ range of grand pianos and uprights. Again offering superior refinements and build quality, with Steinway build patents and features in all of the models. These pianos are made at the largest piano manufacturing plant in the world, the Pearl River factory in China.
Who Owns Steinway & Sons?
It has recently been bought by the Hedge fund Billionaire John Paulson, who owns a number of Steinway pianos himself. In a statement he vowed that nothing will change under his ownership, in producing the finest pianos in the world.
How Many Pianos Do Steinway Make In A Year?
The production of Steinway pianos has grown steadily throughout the lifetime of the company, to date the company produces approx. 1000 grand pianos and 250 upright models in the Astoria factory in New York, and a similar amount in the Hamburg factory. Steinway have been noted over the years for producing some very special individual piano pieces for American presidents, various Royal families around the world, pop artists and other individuals, these are, and remain valued and treasured priceless pianos around the world.

How Much Does A Steinway Piano/ Grand Piano cost?
Steinway new upright model K series, are priced in the region, from £30.000. New Grand pianos start pianos, start in the region of £60.000 up to £171.000. To date the most expensive Steinway was made in Hamburg in 2008, it took 4 years to build, and is named ‘Sounds of Harmony’ it consists of 40 different inlays of wood and cost £1.2 million.

What Are The Differences Between Models Of Steinway Pianos?
The woods used in producing any Steinway model are naturally seasoned for at least 2 years before they are used in the making of a piano. The inner and outer Rims of a Grand piano are continuously bent in presses in 'one piece', this promotes greater clarification of sound from the piano. Steinways have a ‘Diaphragmatic Soundboard’ which was developed on the Model S, and is now on all models. This design gives Steinway pianos an unparalleled excellence of sound and tone. The soundboard on the k52 upright model has the same ‘Speaking Area’ as that of a six foot grand piano.
The model ranges, are in Uprights the K series, and in the grand piano range , from the Model ‘S’ at 5’1” through to Model’s O, L, M, D ,A all different in length and individually giving a different sound, right up to the very popular Model D concert Grand at 8’11”, this is the model many people will see on TV at many great concert stages around the world, The Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Carnegie Hall, to name a few. Steinway pianos are very much the preferred option of concert artists all around the world.
Are Steinway Pianos The Best?
In the Top 10 listings of pianos around the world, Steinway has been for many years, and remains No 1. Other pianos brands may be brighter in sound, but Steinway are recognised as a 'More Creative Instrument' to both play and work with. And as said previously, it is the most preferred option of all performing artists around the world.
Does Steinway Make Digital Pianos?
Steinway do not produce digital pianos. A high quality Acoustic piano is far superior to any digital piano, in offering an accurate playing experience and developing correct playing Techniques. Price need not be a deterrent, with the Boston and Essex range of pianos offering a world class acoustic piano in financial reach.
