What Should I Learn First? Piano Or Keyboard? Why?

Through my career, as a part-time music teacher, I have been asked many times, “which should I learn, keyboard or piano? And why? The keyboard is easier, isn’t it?"
Well here goes, firstly I don’t think either is any easier than the other, they both have their elements of difficulty associated with learning the relevant skill of playing that instrument. True they both need coordination of both hands and of course learning the notes of music. But, it’s in the technical understanding, of the purpose of the hands on the instrument, and more so with the piano.
On both instruments your right hand will be the same, playing the melody or tune as you may know it. The left hand on a keyboard adopts a different role compared to a piano, in that it is a Chord shape or a single finger note which the keyboard plays as an accompaniment sound to your right-hand tune. And your left-hand movement is far less than on a piano.
The above, being said, on a piano the left hand again does play an accompaniment role as a keyboard to the right hand, but in a more technical way, in that you need to understand the notes of the piano in the left-hand area of the keyboard and from the music aspect learn what is known as the bass clef.
On a piano, the left-hand plays a more fluid role, in playing separate notes up and down the register. I understand this may a bit daunting! But everyone would start from a basic point with a tutor, in learning the notes of the clef and in time gaining movement over the register through practice, and of course coordination with your right hand.
In answer to the first question above, Piano is the one I would advise anyone to learn first, why!? Because in learning the notes of the left-hand bass clef of piano music, which may include some scales, when you may move to play a keyboard, you can easily see how a chord is made up and which notes , the 1st , 3rd and 5th of a scale make a chord which you play on a keyboard.
