Music is something everybody is aware of, and for children, it is a great educational activity that they can take part in within their education and also as an extracurricular activity. Music lessons may not be an extra class or after school club that you may have thought of for your children, however not only will children really enjoy the lessons but they can really benefit from the lessons - not only musically but also in many other ways too. Below is a list of reasons why music lessons could be beneficial for your children:

1. Confidence

Children often need the boost of self-confidence to encourage them to overcome obstacles they are faced with on a daily basis, this can be in all aspects of a child's daily life and having something that can encourage them to carry on going will most definitely boost their confidence. When learning to play a musical instrument it can, of course, be quite challenging, however, the rewards do outweigh the challenges and children can learn to accept constructive feedback which then helps them to understand how they can improve further. Not only does this improve skills, but it also informs the children that everybody makes mistakes, this is very important for children to remember so they are not discouraged and feel they want to give up.

2. Social Skills

Social skills link back to confidence building, having music lessons whether these are 1:1 or in group sessions, can build social skills where children are encouraged to work as a team and also to interact with those around them. This can also benefit the children when it comes to performing in a large group as they know how to work with others to ensure they are playing the correct instrument at the correct time etc, this improves social awareness skills. When working as a team, all children are working towards achieving the same goal, they will build friendships whilst feeling a sense of accomplishment. Having these social skills will also count towards the confidence building skills.

3. Exciting Hobby

It is encouraged that children should take part in fun, exciting hobbies that instantly lift their moods, to encourage a postive mind and attitude. Sitting and watching TV or playing on an electronic device doesn't give the same after effect that learning and playing a musical instrument does as it has no sense of accomplishment throughout. Learning a new skill is enjoyable and whilst you play your instrument and enjoy, you are expanding your knowledge even further whilst building an exciting hobby along the way. Allowing children to engage in an exciting activity outside of school hours is a great way for them to enjoy their free time.

4. Improves Academic Skills

Many studies have shown that music can improve the function of the brain and increase academic and numerical skills, as music can help you to memorize academic facts and build up your long term memory. When learning to play an instrument you will learn to understand beat, rythmn and scales and this can link to numerical patterns which help to develop your brain to understand certain areas of math that involve pattern recognition such as fractions, multiplications and more.

5. New Skill

Not only are all the above the perfect reasons to start learning how to play a new instrument, but more importantly you are creating a very exciting new skill for yourself or for your children, playing musical instruments can just be a hobby, but if you want to aim higher you can!
